Press Release - GCSE Results

2010 Results Smash All Previous Records!

Burton Borough is delighted to announce that this year’s GCSE results have exceeded all previous results by a considerable margin.

Looking at the key benchmark statistics, used by the Government, this year’s students achieved:

  • 5+ A*-C including English and Maths: 60% (53% in 2009, which was a record in itself).
  • 5+ A*-C: 73% (65% in 2009, which was also a record)

Amongst the 222 students’ results, there are several outstanding individual achievements.  These include

Jonathan Lewis:       6A*, 4A, 1B, 1C

Alice Dugmore:       5A*, 6A, 1C

Hajera Rahman:       5A*, 3A, 2B, 1C

Stephanie Harrison: 4A*, 6A, 1B

Headteacher, Dave Hill, commented

“I am blown away by this set of results.

On the key measure of 5+ A*-C (including English and Maths) our students achieved a 7% increase in one year when compared to the results in 2009 which was itself a record.  This means that an additional 16 students leave the school with the qualifications that will greatly increase the opportunities they have throughout their lives.  In fact there has been a massive 17% increase since 2007, when students achieved 43% on this particular measure.

I would like to congratulate all the students on their success, which is a reward for their hard work.  This level of improvement could not have been achieved, however, without the professional commitment and sheer hard work of their teachers at Burton Borough over the last five years.  I would like to thank them all for supporting the changes that we have put in place, which are now clearly paying-off.”

The Chair of Governors, Paul Broomhead, added

“This is a truly fantastic set of results.  It confirms the progress the school has made in recent years, and is just reward for all the hard work put in by all the staff, parents, and of course the students themselves.  The changes made at the school in recent years, are now bringing their rewards in terms of results.

Following our very successful OFSTED inspection, this completes an outstanding year at Burton Borough.”

OFSTED Inspection : March 2010

Following our recent inspection, I am pleased to be able to confirm that our report has now been published.  A full copy can be obtained from:

  • The OFSTED website
  • Our own website : OFSTED Inspection Report
  • Contacting the school, and we will arrange for a printed copy to be sent to you

We are pleased by the outcome of this inspection, which recognised the considerable progress that the school has made recently.  In our previous inspection (2007) only two features of the school’s work were graded “good”, whilst on this occasion ten features were given a grade of “good” with one “outstanding”.  We are particularly pleased that the impact of our Arts specialism, the caring and inclusive nature of the school, and the overwhelming support of our parents, have been fully recognised.  Most of all, we are delighted that the hard work in improving the quality of teaching has led to the majority of lessons now being independently judged as being good or outstanding.

Our GCSE results have improved to 53% (5+ A*-C including English and Maths) in 2009, from 45% in 2007 but we fully accept the challenge from Ofsted to raise them still further.  We are confident that the developments already put in place, and praised by Ofsted, will lead to us exceeding our targets and being judged at least “good” overall at the next inspection.

The school is clearly moving in the right direction, and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for your support in this.  As the report makes clear, major developments must continue and as you know we already have many plans in place to ensure that this happens.

I do hope that you will read the report in full.  Having done so, if there is anything you would like to discuss further with either myself of Mr Broomhead (Chair of Governors), please do not hesitate to get in touch by either letter, email or a telephone call.

Yours sincerely

D Hill

PLATINUM Success at the NCBF Regionals!

On Sunday 22nd November 2009, the Burton Borough Big Band, Concert Band and Junior Wind Band competed at the NCBF Regional round held at the Great Sankey High School in Warrington. 86 students from the school took part in the competition, and for several of the students playing in the Junior Wind Band, it was the first time they had played infront of an audience, let alone in a competition.

After weeks of rehearsal, all three bands played fantastically well and to our delight each achieved the newly introduced Platinum Award.

This success adds to the bands growing number of awards and means they will now perform at the NCBF Finals, held in Bimingham in April 2010.
