Design and Technology

In Design Technology there are five exciting new GCSEs

The GCSEs are all part of the Innovator Suit offered by OCR and include:


Graphics
Resistant Materials
Electronics and Control Systems
Food Technology
Textiles Technology

(One or more these may be studied in yr10 and yr11 as two year courses).

Pupils who gain an A*A-C grade will have achieved an award at Intermediate Level 2 (Level 2 of the National Qualifications Framework)

Pupils who gain a D-G grade will achieve an award at Foundation Level 1 (Level 1 of the National Qualifications Framework)

There will be a wide variety of activities. Some of these will be based on discussion, group work, visits to industry, museums, innovation centres and visiting speakers.

Students will learn to demonstrate creativity, research skills, modelling designing, making and critical evaluations.

Pupils will have the opportunity to experience practice assessments with guidance and support to enable them to achieve their full potential and gain confidence.

We will be building on their prior learning and involving students in personal thinking and learning skills.

Each of these GCSEs has the same aims and assessment criteria which are set out below.

The Aims - to enable students to:

Make decisions consider sustainability and combine knowledge and understanding in order to design and make quality products.

Explore aesthetics, technical, economical, environmental ethical and social dimensions interact to shape design and making.

Analyse existing products and produce practical solutions to needs wants and opportunities and recognise the impact on the quality of life.

Develop decision making skills through individual and collaborative working.

Understand that designing and making reflect and influence cultures and society and that products have an impact on lifestyle.

Develop skills of creativity and critical analysis through making links between principles of good design, existing solutions and technological knowledge.

Portfolios will be produced as evidence of achievement in the controlled assessments. Students will be able to use a range of ICT applications, photography, voice recordings and videos to communicate the development of their ideas.
