Travel to learn

In addition, as part of our aim to personalise our Key Stage 4 curriculum, we will be offering the opportunity for some students to follow vocational courses for one day a week at Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT), New College, or with County Training and several other providers. This will use up two preferences. Students will be required to complete an application form and attend an interview. They must be able to demonstrate a good record of behaviour, reliability and a positive approach to studies. A very good level of school attendance must be proven along with the required predicted SAT’s entry grades. This preference must not be taken lightly as it does demand a high level of personal commitment.

Young Apprenticeships

Students can express a preference for modern apprenticeship courses at TCAT. These courses involve two days of study per week out of school. One day involves theory work at TCAT and the second day is mainly spent on work placement. Such a high level of commitment means that this takes up all four preference choices. No other preference subject can be added.

Students need to select courses according to their ability. Level 2 courses are higher and more demanding than Level 1. Students can establish whether they are level 1 or level 2 potential from their KS3 targets and monitoring. Students who have targets in English, Maths and Science of level 5 and above and are broadly performing to that standard in the latest monitoring, are potentially level 2 GCSE. If predicted SATs grades are below level 5, level 1 GCSE courses should be selected.

Interested students should consult the Telford and Wrekin Area Prospectus ‘Making Learning Work’.
