The Burton Borough School

The Mission

to enrich, inspire and empower…

  • All students within English are set by ability.
  • Regular setting reviews mean that students can move up or down if their performance warrants it.
  • Students with Special Educational Needs are usually placed in smaller groups and have additional support.
  • At GCSE, all students will study both English & English Literature, except in exceptional circumstances.
  • We expect all students to read widely, both at home and within school.
  • We seek to develop skills for life, plus explore the world of the imagination.
  • The department has excellent facilities and resources, which enable us to deliver stimulating programmes.
  • Our experienced staff are trained to teach in a wide range of teaching styles, using a variety of teaching media.
  • Behaviour for Learning is robustly established. All behaviour which negatively affects learning is tackled immediately.

Our curriculum aims to enable all young people to become:

  • successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

Our programmes and teaching are designed to assist students in:

  • building critical engagement (responding to an information-rich society)
  • crossing boundaries, making connections – real writers, contexts, links between concepts, processes and texts
  • seeing English as vital communication in learning and in life
  • appreciating the richness of English Literature
  • understanding the link between English and cultural identity
  • understanding how language operates
  • viewing English as a pathway to critical understanding and enjoyment of texts
  • We are a cheerful, passionate and resilient team whose motivation is ever to get the best out of all students.
  • We aim for (and get) excellent exam results, but we’re just as interested in developing happy, confident and competent young people.
  • Homework is set regularly, in accordance with the school’s stated policy.
  • We set challenging standards within an atmosphere of mutual co-operation.
