There are 2 Art courses available for students to choose to study in Years 10 & 11: GCSE Art and Design and B.T.E.C. Certificate/Diploma Art and Design.

Students who are considering any art or design-related career should consult Art staff about the most suitable area of study and qualification required. Please note that a portfolio of Art studies is needed when applying for careers and courses in Art and Design.

GCSE Art and Design (OCR)

The course provides opportunities across a wide range of art and design activities. All students work on projects from themes designed to suit their interests, abilities and the opportunities available. Considerable scope is given for personal creative development, with students taking a large part in determining the direction of their own projects.

Assessment is in two parts:

60% coursework- Students are required to submit a minimum of three completed projects, along with all research and preparatory studies, to satisfy the coursework component.

40% exam (practical)- In the Spring term of Year 11, they will be given their final externally set exam project.

Sketch books form a vital part of the research and recording element of the course and it is expected that students will use sketchbooks continuously to record the development of their work.

This course is suitable for all those who enjoy creative work and are prepared to undertake the considerable amount of practical work involved. Students who will benefit most from this course will be those who show a genuine interest in the subject, a commitment to undertake the work required and a level of ability that allows them to respond to those requirements of the course that deal with the study of the work of other artists. Commitment to regular practice of skills (such as observation drawing and researching) is required. Much of this will be carried out independently and in the student’s own time. These activities would form the main part of the personal study set on the course. There is also a requirement to study the work of other artists and practitioners and to make connections with the student’s own work.

B.T.E.C. Certificate / Diploma Art and Design (EDEXCEL)

The course will cover many aspects of Art & Design and it will give students the opportunity to work with a range of media including both 2D and 3D materials, processes and techniques. There will be links with the Art & Design industry and students will study those areas where Art & Design has an impact on our day-to-day life, including advertising, the media and leisure activities.

This course is equivalent to 2 GCSE A* - C grades and therefore it will cover 2 option blocks. This requires a substantial degree of dedication and the ability to work independently.

Students on this course will study 2 core units and 1 specialist unit.

The 2 core units cover the skills, knowledge and understanding required to use a wide range of Art & Design media including Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, ICT, Film, Photography and Textiles.

1 specialist unit that could be taken from:

Graphic Design, Visual Arts, 3D Design, Photography, Interactive Media, Surface decoration and Textile Construction. The Interactive Media section could include working with film, animation etc.

It is a very practical course and it is a good introduction for those who may be intending to work in any area of the Art & Design industry. The course provides a good basis for those who want to go on to study Art & design after they leave school and it links directly with more advanced qualifications e.g. BTEC Nationals.
