This is particularly valuable for pupils who may benefit from studying a reduced number of subjects, or who would benefit from more work on essential skills such as literacy. It is planned that this should also include a considerable amount of practical work some of which will be outside of the classroom. We arrange this on an individual basis with students and parents, rather than offering it to all students.

This is a double-option course in other words it takes twice as much time as a normal single option course. There will only be one group and this group will be limited to a maximum of 16 students.

ASDAN is a nationally accredited, flexible, activity-based programme which develops key skills within a variety of contexts. It is a flexible activity-based programme through which it is possible to develop some of the important skills that we will need in life. The emphasis is on co-operation and collaboration, rewarding achievement and assisting progression of learning.

The Scheme gives students a real sense of ownership and control of their learning. Learning to set realistic targets, working and negotiating with other people – adults and other students, encourages self confidence and self-esteem and raises levels of motivation.

ASDAN contains a number of challenges, which encourage the student to become more skilled at:

• improving learning performance
• communication
• application of number
• working with others
• problem solving
• information technology

The skills listed above are known as KEY SKILLS, and they are skills which are highly valued by employers and other educational institutions. They will help our students to make the most of employment and training opportunities.

How to complete the Award

There are a number of challenges that need to be completed and each student will need to keep a well-organised file of work. As each challenge is completed evidence is collected and the work is then assessed. Challenges include work in the following areas – Home Management, Health and Survival, World of Work, The Environment and Information Handling and other areas.

To achieve the Award which will be offered at Bronze Level in the first instance the student will by required to:

• Complete the required number of challenges
• Present an organised file of work, including action plan/review sheets
• Produce a summary of achievements

Students will be invited to follow this course at Key Stage 4.
