An Introduction to The Burton Borough School

The Burton Borough School is situated on the southern edge of Newport, in Audley Avenue. The school was opened in 1957 and since then has developed steadily. In September 2004 it was designated a Specialist Arts College. This achievement is already bringing in significant additional resources: these are helping to enable improvements which have an impact across the whole curriculum and not just in the arts subjects. Over recent years there has been an ever increasing demand for places at the school. The roll has grown 1120 students and this has also meant that investment has become available to extend and refurbish accommodation.

Computers are used extensively throughout the school. There are four computer suites housing 30 PCs each and diverse peripheral equipment such as video conferencing facilities. In all we have over 300 computers connected to the network. Almost all teaching rooms have Interactive Whiteboards. This school hosts the nodal point from which access is provided for all Newport schools to the Telford and Wrekin Network which gives safely managed use of the Internet.

The school's newly installed fibre optic network links all classrooms to this central resource so across the curriculum subject teachers can make use of Information Technology as a dynamic and exciting tool for children's learning.

There is a large Hall and adjoining Dining Area with a stage and lighting equipment. Arts College investment has seen this supplemented by the creation of a new dance / drama facility capable of staging smaller scale school and professional productions.

There are currently two gymnasia situated in school but in November 2004 physical education accommodation was vastly expanded when the new sports hall opened. This superb development contains facilities to support a wide range of sporting activity and is a major asset which will be shared with the community. Outside there are tennis and netball courts and extensive fields for rugby, football, cricket, athletics and hockey.
